  • George West President of the Westmoreland Glass Company became involved in the candy container industry in 1906.
  • Some of his designs included trunks, suitcases, clocks, and horns.
  • Candy containers were often decorated with paint and sold as souvenirs.
  • The containers were labor intensive because each piece was hand blown into a single mold.
  • Many other glass companies produced candy containers; Victory Glass Company, L.E. Smith, and Cambridge Glass.
  • By 1940, the candy container began to disappear from the market.
  • Today, some containers are exceptionally rare and can bring astonishingly high prices, in the thousands of dollar range.
